These are the two things to keep in mind as you begin to think about starting your own wholesale business. The Four Methods of Finding Wholesale Goods

As you begin to develop your wholesale business model, you will probably note that finding wholesale good is usually accomplished through four basic channels. These four channels include buying directly from the manufacturer, buying from a wholesale vendor, purchasing from a specific distributor, or buying from a supplier. Each of these avenues comes with its own set of pros and cons. To begin with, you may want to narrow it down to just one of these methods in order to keep things simplified. Most small businesses do not consciously choose one of these methods over another. Rather, using one of these methods has to do with which channels can provide your business with the product selection, volume and size that you are looking for. Moreover, not all of these four purchasing methods are available for all kinds of products. In many cases, you will not be able to use all of these purchasing methods in order to procure products or services for your wholesale business. Most of the time, it is a matter of what method works for your specific needs and business circumstances.

But how do these four methods differ from each other? Which one of these may suit your business model the best?

  • The first method involves buying directly from the manufacturer. This means going straight to the source and buying from the firm that actually makes the product you want to buy and sell. If you are working with a small or new manufacturer firm, you may find that you can develop a close working relationship with them that will allow you to purchase directly.
  • The second method, buying from a wholesale vendor, usually involves buying in large volume sales. If you need to buy large volumes of one type of product, a wholesale vendor may suit your needs.
  • The third method involves buying from a specific distributor. If you need to sell in lower quantity lots, then purchasing goods from a distributor may be what you need for your business.
  • Finally, the fourth method of buying goods involves working with a supplier. A supplier is similar to a distributor in that they usually specialize in one class of products.
